How To Purify Your Home/Dorm Room

how to purify the air in your home

With all of the harmful chemicals and toxins out in the world, in the air, in the places we work, it’s super important to have a space that has been cleansed of these pollutants.  Most people just focus on outdoor air when they hear ‘air pollution” but you may be surprised to learn that the EPA has discovered indoor air contains 2 to 5 times and potentially as much as 100 times more contaminants than the air outdoors!  Fortunately, there is one place that you can control – your home, or even just your room. This place should be your sanctuary; the place where you can relax, unwind, get away from the daily stresses of life, and heal.

When cleansing your living space, it’s important to only be using natural products like those that I’ll be explaining below.  Conventional home cleaning products like air-fresheners, soaps, window cleaners all have terribly toxic ingredients that are linked with numerous health problems… one of the key ingredients in popular air-fresheners is formaldehyde – this is a known carcinogen!  I’ll talk more in-depth about the harmful effects of normal cleaning products in a future post, but for now let’s get you on the right track to cleansing and purifying your room!

Plants

Plants are the easiest way to add some life to your room without needing to go overboard on decorations the best air purifiers on the market.  I have two plants (Snake and Heart Leaf) and I can really tell the difference they make in air quality – the air in my dorm room smells so clean compared to the other 3 rooms in my suite.  Most indoor plants don’t need to be watered frequently (I only water mine 2-3 times a week) but if you think you’d be bad at keeping plants alive, an air purifying plant like Aloe Vera would be an ideal choice because they are almost un-killable and barely need to be watered.

Essential Oil Diffuser

Essential oil diffusers are excellent tools to purify your room and receive some awesome health benefits at the same time.  The options are endless with a diffuser depending on what oil/s you want to diffuse. You can choose oils that specifically clean the air, boost your immune system, help you relax, help boost your energy, or just smell good.  It’s all up to you! If you’re looking to clean the air, I recommend tea tree, lemon, or eucalyptus. For a good, clean smell, try lemongrass, orange, or tropical scents. If you want to reduce stress and anxiety, try lavender, frankincense, or chamomile.

Himalayan Salt lamp

Whether you choose to place one on your desk or next to your bed, Himalayan salt lamps are great room decorations and have numerous health benefits!  They do a great job cleaning the air, generate negative ions (which increases flow of oxygen to the brain, WebMD), soothe allergies, and can boost mood and energy levels with its soft, orange hues.

Natural light

Open the windows and let that sun shine!  Your room should be full of natural light – it will add to the aesthetic, fuel those plants that you just got, and boost your energy throughout the day!

Air purifier

The obvious option to purifying the air in your room – an air purifier!  Dr. Mercola has amazing air purifiers that for the whole house and individual rooms.  These purifiers clean the air of all contaminants and make sure that you are only breathing in the highest quality air to detox your body from the toxins in your environment.  His air purifiers also shoot out a continuous stream of millions of negative ions that seek out an neutralize contaminants!
