I’ve made a huge mistake.
For the past three years, I have responded with “I’m paleo” to all of the questions that I get from friends, family, or just people I meet asking about my diet, or why I’m not eating certain foods, or why I don’t allow myself any cheat days from clean foods.
When I say, “I’m paleo”, I’m unintentionally classifying myself as an individual who follows the paleo diet. Nothing more. Nothing less.
This is something that has been bugging me for quite some time because… in all honesty, it’s not the exact truth.
The Two Big Problems
I see two big problems with classifying myself as “paleo”.
For starters:
I Don’t Actually Follow A Paleo Diet
At least, in the traditional sense that most people immediately think of.
At its foundation, the paleo diet is centered around meats and fish, with vegetables, nuts, and seeds filling in for the rest of your hunger. On my plate, the veggies are the main course with just a little bit of meat on the side.
Second of all:
My Diet Is Only 20% Of The Whole Story
By classifying myself by one high protein diet, I dismiss the other 80% of my actions that make up my healthy lifestyle (get ready for a long list):
- My toothpaste has no fluoride or added chemicals
- My shampoo, body wash, conditioner, and deodorant are 100% non-toxic
- I don’t choose to inject aborted fetal tissue and “a continuous line of monkey kidney cells” into my body
- I use essential oils rather than harmful febreeze to clean the air in my home
- I wear blue light blocking glasses when I use a computer for long periods of time and 1-2 hours before I go to sleep
- I take various supplements every single day that are from trusted, independently-tested laboratories
- I ground myself in nature as much as I can
- I meditate every single morning
- My cookware is mostly cast-iron to avoid toxic chemicals leaching into my food while I cook
- I don’t put hot beverages in plastic containers because the heat causes BPAs to leak into the liquid and into my body
- I wear 100% cotton clothing as much as possible because it is sustainable and not toxic to the body
- The sunscreen I wear is completely non-toxic
- I put my phone in airplane mode every night to decrease EMF exposure
- My phone case is from a high quality brand that protects from EMF and phone radiation
- I have a lap desk that blocks all EMF and radiation from hitting my crotch
- I clean my things with a vinegar and essential oil solution rather than an industrial cleaner loaded with chemicals
- I go to a chiropractor not because my back has been causing me pain, but because it contributes to the overall function of my body
- I don’t take allergy medicine and instead take extra probiotics or activated charcoal or a Restore drink to clear up my gut and thus remedy my symptoms
- I always eat organic, non-gmo, grass-fed, free-range, pasture-raised as much as is available to me
- I don’t touch receipts because studies show that the chemicals on them literally turn boy fish into girl fish – they contain hormone disruptors!
- My bedding is all 100% cotton and non-toxic
- I do calisthenics and cross fit 4x a week
- I take cold showers every day for recovery and discipline
I Am… (Groot?)
I am so much more than “paleo”. I think a more accurate description of my diet would be the WAPF (Weston A. Price Foundation Diet). But again, look at me falling to the trap of classifying myself by a diet…
No more.
I am myself and I am enough.
How To Define Yourself
That’s about all I have to say for today. The moral of the story: don’t define yourself or let others define you by how you eat.
Define yourself by your thoughts, actions, habits, behaviors, beliefs, and character.
Guess what, lucky for you there is a label that you can put on that. It’s your name.
Mic drop 🙂 See you guys in the next blog!
